What is Sick Building Syndrome?

The term Sick Building Syndrome is used to describe situations in which building occupants experience acute negative physical and mental effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a contaminated area when no specific illness or cause can be identified.

People in sick buildings complain of symptoms such as headaches, eye, nose, or throat irritations, dizziness, nausea, difficulty in concentrating, along with physical and mental fatigue.

The reason the home or building may be suspected is that most complainants report relief soon after leaving the infected enclosure. 

Although not all the reasons for SBS are known, it is logically assumed that the negative health effects of sick building syndrome can be at least partly attributed to various mold, bacterial, and viral contamination.

Inadequate ventilation can cause mold and bacteria to grow and accumulate in homes and offices. While our homes are more energy efficient they are now perfect breeding grounds for bacteria.  Older homes naturally have higher mold and bacterial counts simply due to age.

Bacterial contaminants may breed in stagnant water that has accumulated in ducts, humidifiers and drain pans, or where water has collected on ceiling tiles, carpeting, or insulation.

While high levels of ozone are very toxic, in a short time of only about an hour most of the ozone will revert back to non toxic oxygen.

No, if the total ozone concentration in a particular room never reaches the "kill ratio" the bacteria and mold will never be killed.  High levels of ozone much be achieved for at least an hour or two to kill mold and bacteria.

Small ozone generators can never achieve the high levels of ozone needed to kill bacteria.
That's because before the ozone level can never reach the "kill ratio" the ozone that was created so many minutes, or an hour ago, has already broken back down into oxygen.

No matter how long a low level ozone generator is run it can never achieve a high enough level of ozone concentration to sterilize a bacterially contaminated environment.

That's why it is very important to choose the proper sized ozone generator if a bacterial, or mold situation is present.

A prominent university test has indicated that a 0.28ppm level of ozone is needed to kill 95% of E. coli bacteria in 120 minutes. Note that is is not a 0.28 ppm rating of an ozone generators output, but rather the ozone in an ENTIRE room. With its 6500 milligrams per hour true ozone output the Air-Zone® XT-6000 can reach those levels in most normal sized rooms.

Ionizers cannot perform high ozone treatments, and thus cannot truly sanitize a room from bacteria and mold like the Air-Zone® XT-6000 can.

Running a small machine for a longer period of time is not the same as using a more powerful machine. This is because the ozone is constantly breaking down, and reverting back to oxygen.

Old style ozone "plates" may create large amounts of Nitrogen Oxides which are offensive, irritating, and dangerous. If not cleaned and aligned constantly, old style ozone "plates" will produce less ozone, and possibly even spark out dangerous high voltage electricity. A square footage rating is no measure of an ozone generator. 
When they say cover 3000 square foot what does that mean?

Is there a very slight bacterial contamination or are the walls growing an inch thick layer of mold?  To claim a machine "completely covers" a certain square footage rating is nothing less than misleading.  An ozone machine that can only produce air purification levels of ozone cannot ever sterilize rooms like an ozone generator that can perform High Ozone Shock Treatments can.

The only way to compare ozone generators is by their output in milligrams per hour.
The best advice is for potential customers to contact us so that we can recommend the proper sized machine for their particular situation.

Customers often tell us . . . "Brand X states that their air purifier will cover my entire home of 3000 square feet. They tell me it will remove ALL the odors, kill ALL the bacteria, kill ALL the mold, and remove ALL the dust from my home." "I was even told their unit will magically work through walls"!!! An intelligent person will quickly realize that achieving all those goals is not scientifically possible. How is a machine rated for 3000 square feet going to work through the walls? The simple fact is that NO tabletop air purifier can purify the air in an entire home. Some air purifiers claim to use "radio waves" that pass through walls.
